Since retirement, I have continued to research, write and teach. I served as Special Consultant to Ambassador Frank Wisner in the American Embassy in New Delhi, India; worked with the Kashmiri Study Group; and taught as a visiting professor at Brown University and the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University.

During my tenure at Columbia University, I also Chaired the Department of History and the Department of Middle East Languages and Culture and served as Associate Dean of the School of International Affairs. From 1978-1980, I served as Counsellor for Cultural Affairs in the American Embassy, New Delhi.
