The Development of the Philippine Earth Scientific Earth Observation Microsatellite or PHL-MICROSAT Program aims to build, launch and effectively utilize microsatellite technology for multispectral, high precision earth observation. It is targeting to launch two 50-kg microsatellites, Diwata-1 and Diwata-2, which are expected to address the country’s need for near real-time and on-demand access to imagery data that will enhance local planning and decision support for climatology, disaster risk mitigation, and resource management. It also endeavors capacity-building efforts through research collaborations among Filipino researchers and experts from Hokkaido University and Tohoku University in Japan, scholarship support to Filipino doctoral and masters students in these two universities, and establishment of the Microsatellite Research and Instructional Facility (MRIF) in UP. The MRIF is a multidisciplinary platform that will sustain technology gains from the program through R&D activities and curriculum development. In long term, this will consequently create satellite technology products and services and other downstream benefits for the Philippine’s local industry.My main involvement as a local team member is to spearhead the planning, setup and operation of EEEI’s Amateur Satellite Station. I am also one of the researchers studying implementations of amateur radio on-board microsatellites and nanosatellites for emergency communications.

In this project, I designed, fabricated, characterized and field-deployed backhaul and spectrum sensing antennas for the ROGER system, a low-cost GSM base station for emergency communications which utilizes TV white space frequencies for its point-to-point backhaul link. It was developed by the DOST and the UP EEEI to serve as a robust backup communications infrastructure that can be readily deployed in vulnerable areas in the Philippines during disasters.
