Since October 2008, I have been a Crown Prosecutor with the British Columbia (Canada) Department of Justice, based in Surrey, British Columbia. I have worked primarily as a trial prosecutor, though I am also experienced in conducting charge approvals, bail hearings, sentencings and appeals. I am a member of the Impaired Driving Resource Group, in which I assist in providing legal and policy advice to colleagues regarding impaired driving prosecutions. I have worked in management, in an acting capacity. Some highlights of my trial work include:- R. v. Gary Johnston (unreported, New Westminster Supreme Court File No. 73860-2, April 15, 2011): The accused was convicted after trial of the 1998 murder of Victor Fraser. As co-counsel, I argued successfully for the admission of a hearsay statement made by the accused's brother to police, in which his brother described in detail the accused's confession to him. I also argued that the accused should be ineligible to apply for parole for 17 years, which was the sentence he received.- R. v. Harinder Paul Singh Pabla (unreported, Surrey Provincial Court): The accused, an off-duty Burnaby RCMP member was charged with assaulting a young woman in a dispute over a parking spot. The trial judge found that there was a reasonable doubt that the accused acted in self-defence and was therefore entitled to an acquittal; however, the judge found that the accused contradicted himself under cross-examination and rejected his evidence on several key points.- R. v. Shakib Shakib and Brandon Nandan (unreported, Surrey Provincial Court File No. 192824): The accused pled guilty to the 2011 manslaughter of Branson Sanders.
