Online magazine covering San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders and Major League Baseball. • Responsibilities included daily reporting, photography, interviews of players and coaches• Web site design and uploading of stories• Generated revenue through advertising and subscribersI was between jobs and dared by a friend to see if I could get access to the teams. I put together a web site and approached the teams asking for a media pass. I was granted access and worked through two years of training camps and regular seasons conducting interviews, taking photos, writing stories and publishing to the web site. My web traffic was climbing but I was also ruffling the feathers of ESPN and CBS in particular. I was a one-man show and had the ability to break stories from the press room without having to send my article to an editor, wait for proof reading and fact checking before publishing. I wasn't paying millions of dollars for access and this caused quite a stir. I was doing my job and doing it well and I had the media relations director of the 49ers going to bat for me. Late in 2002, another person doing what I was with the San Diego Chargers was denied his access and wrote a scathing article on his web site about the team and management. Shortly thereafter a message came down from the NFL that media access would only be granted to TV, radio, or print circulation with 100,000 or more - no web only access. The team's hands were tied by the NFL and my access was revoked. I continued to work with MLB and their alumni association but readership was dwindling. My wife was laid off from Sony in early 2003 and we decided to shut down the web site and move from the SF Bay Area to Paso Robles, CA. This truly was one of the most memorable times of my life. I had a lot of great experiences meeting childhood heroes as well as gaining great work experience.
