Information Edge was initially a joint venture with the Library Board of NSW at the State Library of NSW. Our goal was to provide fee based information services to those businesses and government agencies that did not have their own libraries but needed access to a professional search service. As it was possible to acquire the bibliographic database LISARD from ACI, at Information Edge we were able to rebadge the database, continue to develop it, offer it online via Dow Jones and Informit, and provide monthly alerting services from it to both ACI companies, and other agencies interested in the subjects covered. Major activities included providing online search services, alerting services, company profiles, reputation measurement (in association with the US company Delahaye) and onsite library support for agencies too small to justify employing a librarian. In 1996, after acquiring the Library Board’s interest in the joint venture, Information Edge and its staff relocated to Pitt Street, Sydney where we also commenced offering training on online searching and communicating value of library services, and After5 networking meetings. In 2000 the company relocated to Rose Bay. Our Web Search Pacific Power Searching workshops commenced in 2003.

Manager, ACI Information Service
-
Nov 1972 - Jun 1988
At ACI, I was responsible for a business library in Melbourne and a technical library in Sydney. From these two libraries our staff provided outstanding library and information services to executives in the large multidisciplinary manufacturing company throughout Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, London and New York. We were the second organisation in Australia to introduce online searching in 1976 and we built and managed our own internal databases of bibliographic records, internal technical research reports and marketing research reports. The bibliographic database has been renamed EDGE with a subset MEDGE and although now a closed file, is still accessible via RMIT's Informit.

My role at Excerpta Medica was to assist the Director, Dr Pierre Vinken, in a variety of activities such as negotiating on the contract to publish the Ciba Foundation symposia, negotiating on contracts to sell subsets of the Excerpta Medica database to pharmaceutical companies around the world, developing marketing materials describing the benefits of the Drug Literature Index and Adverse Reactions Titles. In 1972 I was responsible for writing the Dutch government's submission to the UNISIST conference at UNESCO in Paris, since Dr Vinken was Chairman of the Dutch government delegation to that conference.
