Employment Coordinator
-
Jan 2013 - Sep 2016
I was a contractor for the State of Washington's Department of Services for the Blind. The department (DSB) has run a 6-week youth employment program every summer since 1997. I was a participant in 1999 and worked as summer staff summers 2001-2016. As summer staff I worked as Weekend Activity Coordinator and Daily Living Skills Councilor. In 2013 my experience expanded past program start and end dates working as the Employment Coordinator. I maintain relationships with past employers, develop new work sites for our students, follow up with onsite visitations during the program and write final reports.I review staff applications and help conduct panel interviews, participate in the student selection board and help organize the program calendar. I developed job descriptions for the employer and employee's benefit. I interview students over the telephone and bring recommendations to the final student/worksite selection process.

Employment Coordinator

Oct 2015 - Aug 2016
The Washington State Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) serves adult students in the Orientation Training Center (OTC) who need Daily Living Skills training, Orientation and Mobility, Career Services, Computer training and/or learn Braille. I coordinate with students and staff to find volunteer/internship positions for students getting ready to graduate and transition back to their homes and work. Participating in an internship during their last term gives students work experience, a resume and possible letter of recommendation to use in their search for employment.

The Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) has run a 6 week youth employment program every summer since 1997. I was a participant in 1999 and have been staff every summer since 2001. As summer time staff I worked as Weekend Activity Coordinator and a Daily Living Skills Councilor. As a Weekend Activity Coordinator, I researched activities and outings for my blind/visually impaired students to participate in. This often included contacting businesses/museums/parks/etc. for accommodation information and reservations. Most of the time my time was spent escorting 2-10 blind students on public transportation and in public areas. As a Daily Living Skills Councilor I worked with teenage students on banking, budgeting, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and so forth. The goal of the Daily Living Skills Councilor is to teach our students how to be as independent as possible not only for everyday care, but also for the future.
