Overview

phycofarm is an open project dedicated to realizing the full potential of microalgal biotechnology through innovative biofilm photobioreactors. Biofilm cultivation has recently become a hot topic in microalgal biotechnology, since it overcomes the mayor bottleneck of state-of-the-art systems: The handling of huge volumes of water with low biomass content. By reducing water content up to 1,000x, biofilm cultivation saves costs and resources through the efficient use of energy, materials, and infrastructure. Applications of biofilm technologies are versatile: They range from classical approaches, such as the production of high value pigments, aquaculture feeds or biomass feedstock, right to the exploitation of those new species and products which cannot be grown or produced using conventional suspension technology. phycofarm is driven by a team of experienced researchers and entrepreneurs with backgrounds in biotechnology, environmental technology and business administration. We are open to collaborate with companies, research institutions and other stakeholders in order to make industrial-scale biofilm systems a reality.
