Phyco-F is a pioneer in Resource Ecology – the integration of different bio-based industries with each other and with renewable energy for the mutual benefit of all. We have recently concluded a Phase 1 study for the UK Government’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) that looked at the feasibility of deploying microalgal production units (MPUs) at distilleries so that costs can be significantly reduced by using fermentation CO2, process water and nutrients to help grow the algae and working with the distilleries to reduce the cost of electricity on the site through grid balancing (3Gs Project). The secret of success in Resource Ecology is ensuring that all the industrial partners derive significant added value from the relationship. 3Gs project and we looked at how the symbiosis between algae and whisky production could help the distilleries accelerate their journeys to Net Zero and towards a circular economy. The success of the Phase 1 project has encouraged the development of a demonstration scale pilot project which will start delivering microalgal products by late 2023 for evaluation as crop stimulants, textile dyes and animal feeds.
