Tharindu reported directly to me as our Community Engagement Leader for CHASE, a youth led not-for-profit delivering a school based health promotion program in Melbourne’s west. Tharindu set the standard for community engagement in our organisation, working independently to develop a portfolio that is now filled by multiple people. This speaks to Tharindu’s dedication and capability. His warmth and enthusiasm was infectious, and enabling the development of strong partnerships that the organisation still holds to this day. Tharindu is a competent, capable, intelligent worker who leads with empathy and kindness. He sets a positive example and adds immense value to workplace culture. He will shine in any role he’s given. I would not hesitate to give him my highest recommendation.

Of every 30 students in Australia, seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support, leaving five suffering in silence. Sadly, most young people dealing with mental health issues do not reach out for help, largely due to stigma.batyr engages young people by talking to them about mental health and wellbeing, and aims to educate through the sharing of young people’s lived experience stories. As a speaker, my role is to aid in story-telling during batyr's school programs in Melbourne, which are fun, safe spaces for young people to create meaningful dialogue whilst being equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead mentally healthy lives. Oaktree is Australia's largest youth-run organisation, and is a team leading a movement to end poverty. To do this, Oaktree operates through three key arms; raising awareness about poverty and inequality in our region, partnering with grassroots organisations in the Asia-Pacific region and having a strong advocacy presence both in Australia and our partner countries. My role lies within the International Engagement portfolio, which is responsible for managing Oaktree’s engagement across the Asia-Pacific. We partner with local not-for-profits to develop innovative development partnerships with like-minded youth-led organisations in the Asia-Pacific region. By connecting young people we encourage the sharing of knowledge, resources, skills and collaborative projects with a focus on education and youth participation. Part of our work is fostering peer collaboration, and supporting the work of those who share a vision of a more just world. My role as an International Youth Exchange Coordinator is to facilitate the relationship between Oaktree and our partner organisations in India, Cambodia, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. Oaktree works collaboratively with these organisations, focusing on youth leadership and active citizenship. Key aspects of my role involve relationship development and management, identifying opportunities for collaboration, strategy development/implementation and the delivery of the International Youth Exchange initiative, which sees various youth-engaging projects being undertaken throughout the year whilst following a peer partnership model with organisations across the Asia-Pacific.
