Marine mammals, fish, and birds living in the Pacific have their health and survival threatened by billions of microplastic debris that is readily mistaken for food, and ingested without being able to be digested. As Program Director, I will be managing the planning, implementation, and operation of fleets of unmanned robotic vessels designed to collect, compact, and remove plastic debris from our oceans. Our Floating Robots for Eliminating Debris, or FREDS, are designed to be solely powered by solar and wind energy. FREDs are 90 by 100 foot platforms, having two hulls and 4 wingsails in the corners, and a series of forks and combs for collecting multi-size plastic debris. Once the FRED's collection bins are full, they will be remote-controlled to freighters where they will drop off their load of plastic debris and then return to further cleansing the seas. After a decade of mentoring small business startups and helping to commercialize much needed new technologies to solve mission-critical problems, I am now the one starting up a new organization and the one in need of mentoring :) Show less
