Sophie joined my team at Futurecity Sydney office at a key time of growth and expansion. She was instrumental to the success of a number of key projects with new clients with her professionalism, attention to detail and project management skills. She also brought a wealth of connections to the Australian cultural sector and a warmth and energy which made her a true pleasure to work with.

Christiane Statham

Sophie and I have worked together on various projects nationally and I wholeheartedly recommend her for her work in the public art and cultural strategy sphere. Sophie is a diligent, committed and highly experienced cultural strategist, curator and writer, who has developed her practice through many years in the Australian art world. She has also worked with numerous international artists and organisations and has a global perspective on the importance of art and culture in everyday life. She is a creative thinker and a powerful and dynamic project lead.

In this role I work with Futurecity’s international and local teams to develop ambitious new public art and cultural strategies for developments in Sydney, Melbourne and overseas. I work with public and private sector clients on new developments and precincts and collaborate with architects and design teams on projects and bids, collaborating to integrate art with the design schemes. I have acted as Australian Project Lead on several projects in Sydney and Melbourne, including a Public Art Strategy for 80 Collins Street Melbourne, a Revised Governance and Delivery Strategy for Public Art at Barangaroo, Sydney, and an Arts & Cultural Strategy for the ambitious multi-use Southbank by Beulah development in Melbourne's Southbank Arts Precinct. Resulting from this work, I also curated a major new facade artwork by Atong Atem for Southbank by Beulah and contributed to the Futurecity team's development of a partnership with Centre George Pompidou for the client. I have also acted as Senior Curator/Strategist on the Cultural Strategy for key Sydney Projects including the Australian Technology Park in Sydney and QICIGRE Castle Towers Shopping Complex. I have also contributed to many other projects and bids including major cultural infrastructure renewal, transport projects and frameworks for cultural partnerships and programming in private developments.

As Artistic Program Manager Kaldor Arts Projects, over 12 years I undertook fourteen ambitious art projects in sites across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, working with some of the most celebrated international contemporary artists on world-premiere artworks and major re-presentations of large-scale international exhibitions and programs. In this role I curated large-scale public artworks by Thomas Demand, John Baldessari and Michael Landy and acted as managing curator for the development of Australian premiere projects in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, including Allora & Calzadilla, Marina Abramovic: In Residence, 13 Rooms, Bill Viola and Anri Sala, amongst others. I have delivered strategic planning, curatorial and program development and overseen marketing and fundraising strategies that have supported the growth of Kaldor Public Art Projects over the past decade. This includes consolidation of the Kaldor brand and development of a growing team; forging a range of government, museum and creative industry partnerships; a greatly expanded scale of projects and programs; more than 400% increase in live and online audiences; expanded and diversified fundraising revenue, as well as directly sourcing funds up to 1 million for key projects. I have collaborated with numerous creative industry and cultural sector partners for art commissions and programs, including Sydney Festival, Sydney Dance Company, Melbourne Festival, GoMA, amongst others. This has given me experience working across diverse artforms and creative practices. I have had the opportunity to work on projects involving Aboriginal heritage and culture, including a major project with artist Jonathan Jones, offering me an understanding of Indigenous cultural heritage, practice and protocols. Additionally, I have worked on overseas tours and managed international collaborations with the Monnaie Museum (Paris), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and Art Basel/Fondation Beyeler, (Basel).

In this contract position I worked closely with MPavilion's CEO to develop new narratives around the MPavilion event and programs and to help shape the pitch documents and materials to support stakeholder, government and donor engagement with the event. I undertook meetings with staff and conducted a team workshop to support fundraising aspirations and program directions. I also worked with the CEO to shape the framework for selected commissioning programs, including an artist-in-residence and writer-in-residence program and an artwork commissioning series in collaboration with new regional partners, Shepparton Art Museum and Geelong Gallery.
