I am Chief Activist of the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, a community activist center, educational enclave, & safe-space for our LGBTQIA kids, intersectional families, & all marginalized people, connecting our disparate communities, both locally & nationally. The BRCSJ organized Princeton NJ’s first-ever Pride Parade last year & just held NJ’s first ever Virtual Pride which gathered together well over 10,000 marchin’ in solidarity & celebration, offers free therapy & counseling in-house for our LGBTQIA youth, & holds numerous rallies, events, & happenings, both of-the-moment in response to current events & in dedicated planned programming in support of political, environmental, gender, & identity issues.Upon receiving the tremendous honor of being named the NEA Social Justice Activist of the Year last summer, I left my classroom of almost 25 years & to move forward with my experience, my knowledge, & my passion & bring my service to a greater platform—to serve & defend our community, hence the gestation of our Center. The BRCSJ is a true community Center in every sense of the word.We provide a safe haven & an educational enclave for all our students as well as our entire community. A concrete manifestation of a voice for the voiceless, a friend to the friendless~ protecting, respecting & loving all our folks: LGBTQIA; immigrant families; our brothers & sisters from all economic, cultural, & spiritual backgrounds: community members of every color, gender (or lack thereof), religion (or lack thereof), age, national origin, & physical or mental abilities... those who are marginalized, forgotten, bullied or otherwise underserved by the present systems in place. We need to teach in the classroom, inspire in the streets & be a force in our communities.
