Eva Konigsberg, EA, MBA

Phil Chang is the embodiment of a creative entrepreneur. He is fantastic at discovering new market opportunities. I’ve witnessed Phil’s ability to take products and services from one venue and re-purpose them to entirely different, expanded markets. Phil also has a way to turn business 'adversaries' into 'allies.' It’s dynamic to watch how Phil can unite both sides of the table into a strong strategic alliance searching for a common solution in real time. Phil can convince anyone to embrace a different perspective, and he does it in a way where that the person doesn't feel like she or he has been talked into anything. Phil’s mannerism is low key but his doggedness is extremely effective, in the most smooth way you can imagine. Phil Chang is going places. Will you be one of those places?

Shankar Bhaduri

Phil Chang is a guy who can think very big and see the big picture. He has an uncanny ability to spot the trends in the market ahead of its time and much before other come to understand it. Visionary leader who would need a great entrepreneur to understand him and bet on his ideas which are often 'Goldmines'. A rare gem in this era of 'me too' thinker.

AI involving human-assisted NLP for understanding language use to detect and rate a number of vectors, such as deceptive content, political bias, hate speech, degree of controversy, and so on. This is fundamental in the fight against fake news and misinformation on the web, but also has other useful applications. Helped guide the company through a major pivot and a new MVP focused on market intelligence and packaging of data feeds and data extraction, using Kubeflow/AWS infrastructure and specialised ML models.

Imagine is one of the largest companies supplying video technology to the broadcast industry, including pay TV and OTT (premium content services delivered over the Internet). In the Ad Tech division, my focus is on OTT Dynamic Ad Insertion and Unified Distribution, as well as ad sales management systems. I developed the market strategy, solution definition, product direction and reseller network for APAC. Initial engagements included Dentsu and TV Tokyo in Japan, SETTV in Taiwan and MNC Group in Indonesia.

Elemental develops disruptive video technology for powering video delivery to multiple screens - mobile, computer and TV, which is exploding in usage and complexity. Elemental also developed an innovative cloud platform with a hybrid on-premise-to-cloud architecture. While managing Japan overall, I performed regional product management that accelerated Elemental in 4K streaming and linear broadcast encoding. Elemental is based in Portland, OR and I interfaced heavily with the HQ on a daily and nightly basis. I eventually had two direct reports (field engineering and marketing) and seven indirect reports (at the main channel partner, a small group within CTC). My actual engagement with Elemental started as CEO of Sairis Group, when I became the first reseller in Japan and closed the first two deals with J:COM and J-stream.

Mobile page views grew from 1 billion to 2.5 billion monthly during my tenure, and I defined the product direction of several mobile versions of Wikipedia, the fifth largest website in the world. I also guided development of mobile analytics and led the effort to develop a specific Android app for Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, a global photo contest that enabled anyone to contribute photographs of national heritage monuments. The current mobile web UI was one of my projects as well as a strategy for driving user contributions. This role overlapped with my time at Elemental. After leaving Japan, Elemental offered a contract which later turned to full-time employment, and for one year I worked full-time at Wikipedia while handling Elemental's business in Japan at night. Here is my user page on Wikipedia EN that has a list of some documents I authored in this role, and also a capsule version of my life story (please note the reports of analytics have been frozen at June 2015 because of a general move to Hadoop): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Philinje

Original product was LiveAct Application Streaming Platform, a new way to deliver rich interactive media across a live videocall connection to mobile phones. Core to the company's growth plan was VideoCloud, a Japanese take on cloud encoding that improves on the standard approach used in the US and Europe. During this time I developed a partnership with Elemental Technologies and became the first reseller in Japan, evangelizing Elemental to a wide range of broadcasters, pay TV operators and content companies. This resulted in the first two sales for Elemental: J:COM and J-stream. In 2011 after the Great Tohoku earthquake, I moved my family to San Francisco, and began working for Elemental directly.

Managed market growth in Japan, working closely with HQ in SF to create a Japanese version of the consumer software, which syncs digital media between computers and phones, to support a majority of Japanese phones. In addition, I worked with a Japanese associate to use online and social marketing to drive consumer adoption of the doubleTwist software for PC and Mac. This resulted in Japan becoming the second highest country in terms of user base. I also suggested and ran a pilot project with CCC, the corporate entity behind Tsutaya, for a retail promotion with the software on inexpensive USB memory. My business development efforts focused on relationships with device makers, mobile operators and web companies in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
