Adapted and directed plays for company devoted to reinterpreting classical theatre into contemporary language. • Designed and developed educational workshops with teacher study materials for projects \\ • Designed successful after-school writing workshop for teens to adapt plays (from Greek comedy to Shakespeare to Molière) into current language and ideas and develop texts for performance HIP HOP HAMLET PROJECT: About the King's Kids "Hip Hop Hamlet" : Hip Hip Hamlet was developed over a 12-week period by a selected group of creative, dedicated teens, ages 14-18. The King's Kids are serious about writing, creativity, theater and having their voices heard in new ways. Although this play uses many of Shakespeare's famous lines in dialogue or lyrics, it is essentially a piece using contemporary language based on the themes and plot of the original play. We explore suicide, consequences of revenge, paranormal experiences and navigating through dysfunctional family situations. The best way to appreciate the innovativeness of Hip Hop Hamlet is to be well versed in Shakespeare's "Hamlet." We hope it inspires teachers and students to create their own plays and continue to translate the Bard's stories in their own creative ways. HHH evolved as a companion piece to the main stage production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to dig deeper into the understanding of language often lost to the modern ear. Through our storytelling elements, we focus on character, family crisis and life choices. Knowing that "things are not what they seem" and the choices we make in life determine much of our fate is the undercurrent running through this play. Hip Hop and original rap songs drive the play with a percussive rhythm with words drawn from Shakespeare coupled with original lyrics. The result is a taut, aggressive retelling, with no break in the action, sweeping the audience along with dramatic urgency. Show less
