I have informally mentored Olamide since February 2020. He is strong in the spirit of quietly getting things done. What sets him apart is his strong values and his willingness to take action on these. A good example is when, at 18, after feeling discouraged by a lack of diversity in film festivals, he set up his own. This impressed me and many others for more than a few reasons. It was in his willingness to act on values, the ability to overcome obstacles in setting up a festival with few contacts and little experience, the ambition to know the difficulties and do it anyways, the leadership in inspiring a team to assimilate from thin air, the influence in finding key industry figures to support, and the resilience to do all of the above - and during a global pandemic. I hope to see him do more festivals like these, and also to continue to make his own films too!
