Student Chapter Advisor
-
2011 - 2016
I worked as part of a four-person team of advisors to the Student Chapter of the American Public Works Association at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Campus. Our team established this group in 2011 as a means to help develop better awareness about Public Works itself as well as Public Works related careers among civil engineering students by coordinating a variety of formal and social activities and interactions between students and professionals who work in the field.Numerous students who have had membership in this group have gone on to gain positions with local area agencies and consulting firms due to the enhanced strength of the connection between the civil engineering program and the industry, and this success has also translated to increased participation and membership in APWA at the professional level. As they've transitioned to the professional ranks, several former Student Chapter members have also stepped up to become Student Chapter advisors, with several others taking on Professional Chapter responsibilities to initiate and lead a Young Professionals group that has formed a wonderful bridge for new graduates to become involved in APWA as they enter their careers.
