In September 2018, at the age of 22, I secured a job as a reporter with The Hindu Business Line, one of the top financial newspapers in India. I primarily reported on corporate sectors like automobiles, consumer durables, fast-moving consumer goods and media and entertainment. I have also reported on topics like the elections (including ground reports from various places in India); politics; society; human rights violations; health and environment crises; mental health; labour issues; protests and dissent against laws like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019; many pandemic related human-interest stories; as well as business trends and policies. I made concerted efforts to do long-form, narrative journalism on issues like human rights, politics and society, even as it meant extra work over and above my assigned task of covering corporate beats. This was owing to my vigor to tell people’s stories, speak truth to power and hold those in power accountable. From ground reports on how development projects beleaguered an obscure little village in Maharashtra, to discussing the economy with business honchos in their swanky corporate offices, I have had an eclectic experience which is a far cry from the beat-specific focus of my peers. My work with the newspaper entailed in-depth scrutiny of the latest business policies and events corresponding to the beats I tracked; ground reportage on topics like elections, society, health, labour etc; as well as regular interactions and/or interviews with people in the government and business sectors. I have interviewed renowned personalities from different disciplines, which include Pinarayi Vijayan (Chief Minister of Kerala); KK Shailaja (Health Minister of Kerala); Brett Lee (international cricketer); Dav Pilkey (children’s author); Catherine McGuinness (Policy Chair of the City of London Corporation), and Will Cathcart (Global Head, WhatsApp).
