I had the great privilege working with Michael for over 10 years at New York Road Runners. Michael is truly a tremendous business visionary and leader. The most innovative person I’ve ever met, an excellent leader with a wealth of experience in dealing with strategy and growth of an organization. His passion and dedication to NYRR’s mission was incredible. Besides being a smart, passionate and caring individual, Michael is also a very compassionate leader. He truly cares about the professional development and the personal well-being of every team members at NYRR. I am truly thankful for everything Michael did for me at New York Road Runners. In 2016 I left NYRR briefly and when I decided to come back to the organization, he welcomed me back with open arms. From the very first day back, he always made sure that I was getting the necessary help and training needed to become successful at NYRR. The continuous check-ins by e-mail, text and sometimes even walking by my desk truly shows what a kind and caring person Michael is. The time when I hurt my back, Michael even took my MRI to his doctor to see how he could help. Thank you Michael for your leadership and most importantly your friendship.

I first met Michael around 2010(ish) when he was at the NYRR as a consultant. I was introduced to him by a NYRR BOD member, who encouraged me to share my ideas with Michael, as the board was interested in modernizing the organization and bringing in a visionary who could make this happen. Michael was a great listener, and laid out his vision of where the NYRR had to go to become a more modern organization. He discussed with me a revamped website, a runner's center, new ideas for courses (finishing the BX 10MI in front of Yankee Stadium), a new coaching team, better sponsorship (New Balance), new branding etc. As I watched Michael move up over time to COO and then to CEO, he executed on every one of his ideas...it was not just talk...it was actionable...all of it, all while Michael was still the approachable, non spotlight hogging CEO...just a guy who loved running and was superb at marketing/executing!! I was elated when I learned the board made Michael the NYRR CEO...they could not have picked a better person (coming from an avid runner who was participating in a large amount of annual events) Though out the coming years, I would see Michael at many NYRR events (races, on the marathon course, expos..hours before the cancellation of NYCM '12)...he was always present & on top of so many details and would always ask (& be open to) feedback. Always so kind and easy going asking how I was, did I have any injuries, was I enjoying the events etc. Michael's accomplishments at the NYRR were pretty remarkable for a few reasons: 1) He was dealing with an organization stuck in the past from the Fred Lebow days of Running 1.0...with technology (timing chips on shoes, a poor website), an old cranky staff (customer service...?!?!..LOL, a crowded HQ (did you ever see the old 89th st hq?)and those are just the things I observed as being a member. 2) Implementing change at such a large organization when you're dealing with NYC bureaucracy (changing mayors), old time members and staff, outreach to newer runners, helping with underserved communities and their running programs..... is a HARD JOB!! Michael was able to navigate that and get it all done... In summary, here's what I will say about Michael Capiraso: * It was a major LOSS to see Michael depart from the NYRR & there has been a noticeable change since he left the organization. *Any organization would be very lucky and fortunate to have Michael working for them. He has ideas, is well informed, is a visionary, has listening skills, is kind, and very importantly the ability to get things done. (*He's also a pretty damn good runner!! He has an insane amount of NYC Marathons under his belt and has run a lot of races) I am fortunate to consider Michael a friend and look forward to see his future endeavors.

    • Strategic & Visionary Executive Advisor Leading Transformational Change for Sustained Growth/Agility
      • Jul 2009 - Present

It’s not unusual for an ‘event’ to become the catalyst that helps change our lives. Whether eating healthier, becoming active, or processing a challenge, we seek to unburden ourselves from old habits and acquire new ones. I am no different. I choose running to process my challenge. Breaking up is never easy, nor is it uncommon. 28 years ago, my longtime girlfriend dumped me. Thinking I could save the relationship by proving to her I could successfully complete the NYC Marathon, I signed up for the 1991 race. Despite not winning her back, I gained a new experience and perspective as I crossed the finish line. It was a new beginning for me: personally, professionally, mentally and physically. Hooked, the next 28 years of running the NYC Marathon brought unexpected joy. Running daily to stay in shape and train for races, I met other runners who became running partners and found new friends who later became colleagues. Little did I know one relationship would lead me to the New York Road Runners. Ultimately, I was invited to join the organization and given the opportunity to transform it from a running club to the world’s premier running organization hosting the largest marathon race in the world. Through the years of running, I continued processing the ‘breakup’ and now understand the fortuitous path it provided. Had I not been ‘dumped’, would my path have taken me to a tremendous opportunity to give back to the challenge & community that helped me heal? I can’t say for sure. But I can say, I am grateful for the growth, happiness and adventurous miles it has brought to my life; and opportunity to ‘pay it forward’ through serving the running community. Within the book “Tales From The Trails”, I share a moving story about Mauricio Blandino whom I met in 2015. It’s about how the power of running helped him recover from brain surgery. I hope you find it inspirational. —Michael Show less
