  Oxygono is a prominent non-governmental organization working on enhancing government transparency and accountability in Cyprus. In 2022, the organization received the European Union Citizen’s Prize as a token of recognition for its important work.Oxygono in partnership with the Delphi Economic Forum annually organize the Cyprus Forum bringingtogether important figures from the country and abroad to discuss and find solutions to critical areas ofpublic policy in the country. One of the panels in the 2023 Cyprus Forum, scheduled for September 29th, will focus on the Cyprus Attorney General’s unchecked prosecutorial discretion and the imperative need to establish checks and balances. According to the 2022 European Union Justice Scoreboard, Cyprus is the only country in the EU where the review of prosecutorial discretion to initiate, discontinue or omit to initiate prosecutions is not provided.I am currently working with Oxygono coordinating a group of experts on analyzing the subversive ramifications of the Attorney General’s unchecked prosecutorial discretion for the rule of law on the island and the need for pertinent reforms. The group of experts' composition is the following: (1) Dr. Costas Clerides, former Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus;(2) Dr. Dimitry Kochenov, Head of the Rule of Law Research Group at the Central European University andPrinceton University EU Program Associate;(3) Dr. Christos Clerides, President of the Cyprus Bar Association;(4) Dr. Achilleas Aimilianides, Dean of the University of Nicosia Law School;(5) Dr. Stephanie Laulhe Shaelou, Dean of the Cyprus University of Central Lancashire Law School;(6) Mr. Elias Stephanou, First Secretary and founding member of Transparency International–Cyprus,Committee of Experts Government for International Fair Trials member, European Criminal Bar Association member and visiting professor of law at the University of Cyprus.
