Lily Atherton Hanbury was born and raised in rural Virginia, where she developed an appreciation for history and craft from an early age. Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s architecture program in 2002, she worked in the 20th century design department at Phillips auction house in New York, which presented her with her first encounter with jewellery as someone walked by with a tray of historical jewels.A year later, having earned a degree as a gemologist, she helped establish a jewellery advisory with the former president of Christie’s and Harry Winston before moving to London, where for the next decade she continued to work as a creative consultant, building both brands and private collections of art, accessories, and architecture. As the Editor-at-Large and Director of Special Projects of On the Rocks Magazine, an independent biannual jewellery and design publication established in 2014, she curated lectures, exhibitions, and education programs, including events at Frieze Masters with trail-blazing now-industry leaders, such as fine jewellery designers Monique Péan and Marc Auclert.Constantly on the go, Atherton Hanbury began imagining a single pair of shoes, at once practical and elegant, that she would be able to wear from meetings to museum openings—and everywhere in between. In 2016, alongside Katya Shyfrin, she debuted Le Monde Béryl with a new take on the traditional Venetian gondolier’s slipper. Drawing upon Atherton Hanbury’s 20 years of experience in the design world, the London-based brand’s offerings now encompass a range of classically-inspired footwear, in addition to bespoke jewellery, leather bags, and furniture made in collaboration with the acclaimed interiors specialist Abel Sloane.

Worked with the former president of Christie’s and Harry Winston to found a New York based jewellery advisory, buying, selling, sourcing and commissioning precious stones and jewellery for private collections. After moving to London in 2006, I continued to advise private clients, brands and auction houses with a focus on curating and building collections of antique, vintage and contemporary jewellery. I have a particular interest in reinventing and upcycling stones and existing pieces, designing and also collaborating with renowned contemporary designers from around the world. I also work with jewellers and brands on ethical and sustainable sources and practices, branding, sustainable growth, communication strategies and client development.
