To accomplish this, we must build relationships, develop common understandings, and take action. We affirm that the purpose of education for public schools in the Newark community must be to eliminate injustice and inequality; to accomplish this, the public schools must actively challenge race, gender, culture, and class biases. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of literacy and mathematical computation, educators in the public schools are responsible for ensuring that the students attain critical thinking skills which will allow them to be active citizens in a democratic public sphere. Mission •to organize and build the capacity of Newark's educators to deliver a conscious, social justice-based education; •to collaborate with individuals and organizations in the community to support the education our students receive in schools; •to work toward bringing about an equitable, just—and therefore equal—education for Newark's students.
