Amer Akbar, MBA

I’ve worked with Laurence and have found him to be an amazing inspiration to myself and others. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced at guiding organisations towards achieving their maximum potential through setting strategic priorities and assisting with operational effectiveness. I would love to have the opportunity to work with him again and have no hesitation endorsing him as an individual and his capabilities as a strategic leader and executive board member.

Neil Mapes

Larry Gardiner supported Dementia Adventure when we were starting out with trying to establish Dementia Adventure into a sustainable and thriving organisation. He challenged us to think about the long term horizon and be clear about our end goals. He fully participated in board meetings sharing important guidance, positive challenge and advice but also took time to personally support the delivery of various projects with us. His advice and support in those early start up days was very important to us and played an important part in why Dementia Adventure is successful today and we are very glad he continues to be a vocal supporter of why we do what we do.

John McWilliam

Larry is an intelligent, caring man always keen to keep to the point of the business in hand. I know him as a good team member, but he also has leadership experience.

The International Humanitarian Studies Association is a network engaged with the study of humanitarian crises caused by disaster, conflict or political instability. Humanitarian studies concern how humanitarian crises evolve, how they affect people and their institutions, communities and societies, and the responses they trigger. We form a platform for the different disciplines that address humanitarian studies. It offers a venue where these scholarly communities can meet and debate their different insights and understanding of humanitarian crises, in dialogue with policy actors and implementing agencies. IHSA equally welcomes academic scholars, consultants, policy researchers, and reflective practitioners among its membership. Show less

Werkgebied: Borgercompagnie, Foxhol, Froombosch, Harkstede, Hellum, Hoogezand, Kiel-Windeweer, Kolham, Kropswolde, Lageland, Meeden, Muntendam, Noordbroek, Overschild, Sappemeer, Scharmer, Schildwolde, Siddeburen, Slochteren, Steendam, Tjuchem, Tripscompagnie, Waterhuizen, Westerbroek, Woudbloem, Zuidbroek Show less

Show less

In every society, there is an invisible, vital 'space'. It lies between the individual and the state, between the immediate responsibilities facing each individual and the institutional responsibilities of the government. It is a place where people come together and act for the greater good. And it is open to everyone, from every sector of society. In an unhealthy society, this space is empty. People leave the decisions to governments. They are active in their private lives, but passive towards the world around them. In a healthy society, this space is full. It teems with individuals, businesses, community organisations and political groups. It is alive with energy and entrepreneurial activity. People hold institutions and the powerful to account. They oppose and propose. And, free from the short-term pressures, they can think and act for the longer term and in the wider interest of society. Show less

Show less

We help interpret the world’s complex and changing political landscape for the benefit of all. In an ever-changing world where democracy and academic freedom can seem alarmingly fragile, our original mission today resonates more than ever. Through the eyes of our founders, we created a global network and the discipline of European political science. With that comes a responsibility to be the voice of our community, to speak out when we see challenges, to build bridges between countries, schools of thought, and the academic and public spheres. Now in our second half-century, we will continue to grow a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive international network able to interpret the political landscape for all, to help the world understand and benefit from the critical importance of political science. And that, is our most important mission of all. Show less

All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia Purpose: To raise awareness of the condition amongst parliamentarians and to influence legislation and policy making with the aim of improving the lives of people with dementia and their carers. Human Rights: Despite dementia falling within the legal definition of ‘disability’ within domestic and international law, it may not necessarily be viewed in this way by the public, organisations and people affected by dementia. The APPG is looking at how people view dementia and what it means to identify dementia as a disability. It is evident that people with dementia face a number of challenges in having their rights upheld across all areas of life, including accessing healthcare services, exercising their right to vote or being able to live independently in the community. This can partly be because it is considered a ‘hidden’ or ‘invisible’ disability. The APPG is investigating the barriers that people with dementia face in having their rights met and the impact of this on daily life. Show less

We are an independent charity working with adults, families and children's social care and social work services across the UK. People who use these services and their families also use our resources to make informed decisions about their care.SCIE aims to co-produce all our work with people who use services and carers. • Nov 2013 - Nov 2014

In November 2013 75 participants from across the UK created a special Think Tank so that the responses of people affected by current welfare reform could be collected and disseminated. This builds on a continuing Housing and Communities research programme. This special Think Tank is aimed at social housing tenants to help understand the reforms and build resilience. Between April 2008 and December 2010, over 3630 people and 2000 groups from a wide range of tenants’ and residents’ organizations and voluntary community groups in England and Wales have attended 189 training courses at Trafford Hall, the National Communities Resource Centre, under four programmes: Making Communities Work, Do It Yourself, Community Crime Fighters and Playing to Learn. The Trafford Hall Community Futures capacity building initiative is an innovative, practical residential training and small-grants programme which aims to assist community volunteers in creating environmentally, economically and socially sustainable ‘community futures’. It does so by fusing local ingenuity with hands-on skills training to help low-income citizens throughout England and Wales overcome severe resource constraints, strengthen social cohesion and improve overall quality of life. The programme began in March 2010 and is developed and organised by Trafford Hall, home of the National Communities Resource Centre. It is funded entirely by The Tudor Trust. Show less

1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will die with dementia 700,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, more than half have Alzheimer's disease. In less than 20 years nearly a million people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing; it is caused by diseases of the brain and robs people of their lives. Alzheimer's Society champions the rights of people living with dementia and those who care for them. Alzheimer's Society works in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Show less

“At the beginning of the post-Communist era, Romanian orphanages were grim, badly lit, and horribly overcrowded. The children were dirty, badly neglected and undernourished. Thankfully, many of this has changed due to pressure and funding from the international community. Romania has made significant changes to the way orphans are cared for and the monstrous, bleak, Dickensian institutions have disappeared replaced instead by a number of smaller specialist foundations and an effective fostering system. However, a lot is still to be done. Although the orphanages are now better resourced, the orphanages are still very keen for people like you to come and help care for the children. There are still simply not enough adult carers to give the children the individual attention that they deserve and need, particularly where the children have physical and mental challenges. This is where you come in. Your help is needed to help the staff with basic tasks like feeding, bathing and caring for the children as well as simply just spending time with individuals keeping them active with after school activities and games.” https://www.globalvolunteerprojects.org/orphanage/romania.htm Show less

The people of Kibera are some of the most creative, enterprising, and passionate people you could ever hope to meet. Average life expectancy is 30 years of age, skewed by high infant mortality. 19% of children dying before their 5th birthday. Clean water is often difficult to access and can become contaminated with sewage. HIV infection rates are extremely high and are a large contributory factor in the number of orphans living in Kibera. Only around 40% of Kibera’s children attend school on any given day. The unemployment rate is 50% Electricity is scarce and often illegally tapped from power lines. Drop toilets and open sewers are the norm. Many people are using plastic bags when it is unsafe to use public facilities after dark. The average home measures just 12 foot by 12 foot and can accommodate more than 8 people. Kibera is a thriving community filled with people who want nothing more than to be respected and to improve their quality of life through access to opportunities for progress, education, and employment. https://sociology.uonbi.ac.ke/feature/about-us Show less
