Camp Counselor
-
Jun 2014 - Present
As a longtime staff member at Camp Nominingue, I have worked with kids ages 6 - 15 and served as both a counselor and an intermediate staff member, working with children to develop conflict resolution, communication and wilderness skills in order to help them build confidence and understanding. Being both queer and neurodivergent, a big albeit informal part of my role at camp is to be a liason between queer and neurodivergent campers and both staff and other campers in order to help develop fruitful understanding of the issues bearing on a conflict. When I started out as a counselor, my role was primarily in group supervision and running games and educational activities. Now, as an intermediate staff, I continue to have the responsibilities of a counselor but in addition I serve as a first point of contact between the general staff and the office, communicating issues and directions up and down the chain of leadership to the relevant people. My current role involves a lot of "firefighting:" handling complex interpersonal issues ranging from homesickness and bullying to racism and discrimination with an eye towards ensuring that all parties feel a sense of safety and justice as equal members of the community.
