Gary has dedicated a major sector of his life to protecting and saving orang utans since 1973, and has never wavered from that goal. His current organization, Orang Utan Republik, is achieving social change in Indonesia, teaching people to value orang utans and their habitat, encouraging them to plant trees to restore habit for these very close cousins of ours, and helping ease human/wildlife conflict. I met him in the early 1990s and have followed his work ever since. He is one of my great heroes.

Gary is a truly exceptional person. In the time that I have come to know him personally I have seen how his relentless and self-sacrificing work on behalf of orangutans comes from a deep compassion and humanity within him.
