I am one of the data collectors for an exciting multidisciplinary human-robot interaction (HRI) experiment about peer pressure and risk-taking behaviour (based on research by Volmer et al. (2018)). This role is part of my University’s Psychology Research Skills Development Scheme (PRSDS). This entails the setting up of a humanoid robot in one of our Psychology labs, preparing consent forms, and welcoming, briefing and debriefing of participants (nearly 200 in total). An amazing opportunity presented to me during 6th form that helped me push past the limits that exist for me as someone from a low socio-economic background from Hackney, London. I have attended very insightful events related to politics and law, one of which where I was able to meet Nick Clegg MP, and personally debate with him about the feasibility and rationale of a second Brexit referendum. Furthermore, I completed internships at the House of Commons and the Home Office with the support of SMF. Being an SMF student undoubtedly has helped me build confidence through networking and internship opportunities that would otherwise not have been presented to me. Show less

I was elected as a course representative by my cohort, wherein my main duty was regularly meeting and communicating with them in order to escalate their course-based feedback, ideas and concerns to the Psychology Deparment and Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) to co-create the curriculum and generate change (and reporting any developments made due to their feedback back to the cohort). An internship where my assigned project was to produce a research paper about post-Brexit immigration policy and present my policy ideas to Glyn Williams, the Director General of the Border, Immigration and Citizenship System (BICS) - undertaking such extensive research has helped me gain a deeper, more empathetic understanding for and appreciate the complexity of Brexit negotiations and British foreign policy. I also visited the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the American embassy and the Irish embassy, which collectively solidified my then interest in international relations and diplomacy. Furthermore, I met Karen Pierce, the then Permanent UK Representative at the United Nations, and discussed with her what her exciting and eventful career as a diplomat has been like. Show less

An internship where I shadowed Nigel Evans MP and completed administrative and research tasks. These not only improved my communication and problem-solving skills, but also required me to empathise with constituents who presented their concerns regarding healthcare, pensions, etc., and required me to be affirmative in my responses to them. Worked within a small team to set up (approx. 30) beds and a large dining area for our homeless guests. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, as it provided me the opportunity to use my privilege towards a cause I have always been an advocate of: ending homelessness and home insecurity.
