Darren worked in the Financial Accounting and Reporting department of Financial Services. He analyzed investment income, student tuition revenue, provincial government and related party revenue streams, reported on variance and compiled annual related party note disclosure. He prepared annual budgeted financial statements, the quarterly breakdown, and coordinated the budget process at Financial Services. He enjoyed designing nVision reporting templates for improving reporting efficiency, and specifically templates required to complete consolidated financial statement templates reporting to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology. Faculties and central service units relied on Darren for assistance related to financial reporting. During 2012-2013, the University was required to change to Public Sector Accounting Standards, and Darren's primary area of conversion was financial instruments.

Within four months of commencing employment, he updated the backlog of payroll, banking, revenue, and expenditures in ACCPAC, completed the annual audit, brought all delinquent contribution agreement reporting up to date, implemented a new financial filing system, and began identifying and documenting internal control and policy weaknesses. He managed simultaneous contribution agreement audits from various government funding agencies.
