Senior Strategic Initiatives Lead
-
Jun 2016 - May 2017
Was an integral member of the Independent Police Oversight Review. Led by Justice Michael Tulloch, the Review focused making recommendations to improve the efficacy, accountability and transparency of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD), and the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) - bodies that provide police oversight across the province of Ontario. In my role as Senior Strategic Initiatives Lead, I led a broad communication and public consultation strategy that ensured that we engaged with the broader public, various communities (affected families, racialized, Indigenous, mental health, etc), policing, and legal and academic stakeholders. The report and recommendations were completed in March 2017 and can be found at http://www.policeoversightreview.ca/policereport.html In November 2017, the Ontario Government announced Bill 175, a sweeping police reforms Act that incorporated 99% of the recommendations contained in the final police oversight report. Bill 175 became legislation in March 2018, replacing the Police Services Act (1990) with the Safer Ontario Act (2017), which includes the creation of Police Services Act, 2017; Policing Oversight Act, 2017; Ontario Policing Discipline Tribunal Act, 2017; Ontario Special Investigations Unit Act, 2017; Missing Persons Act, 2017; and Forensic Laboratories Act, 2017.
