In 1997/98 we created NDAD for The National Archives (then the Public Record Office); the first such service by a national archive in the world. Digital preservation means ensuring the long-term survival of information and resources which are dependent on information technology in some form. We dealt with corporate, government and personal records, publications, databases, web sites and multimedia, maintaining not just the digital objects but their interrelationships and dependencies. The team at ULCC was created from a standing start over a six-month period in 1997.

Special Projects Manager
-
Jul 1996 - Jul 1997
Following a radical downsizing at ULCC, I was kept on to see if I could find any other ways for us to earn a living, being effectively a manager without a department. I was fortunate that our earlier forays into digital preservation led us to pursue, and win, the contract to run NDAD for the Public Record Office, as it then was, and the formation of our digital archives department.

Head of Systems Development
-
Aug 1991 - Jun 1996
Following a significant restructuring exercise in 1990/1991 and ULCC's move from Cray to Convex as a supercomputer supplier, I became head of a new development division, which merged the old network & communications division with the systems division.

Network Programmer
-
Jan 1985 - Jul 1991
I developed software to support ULCC's X.25 network switching infrastructure, and also system-managed its first VAX/VMS systems. During this time I developed a number of VMS applications which have since received widespread use. I became involved in some national efforts to develop a common user interface to supercomputing services, and served on committees such as IUNC (Inter-University Networking Committee.)

Programmer
-
Jul 1979 - Dec 1984
Working first in the Department of Medical Computing, and then in its successor the Department of Computing and Statistics, I initially worked as a junior programmer supporting researchers using image analysis and pattern recognition techniques in medical research. I later became a systems programmer and systems manager for the centre's new central computing facilities, based on TOPS-20, and gained my first exposure to micros and CP/M as well as networking (in the shape of Decnet.)
