For my first two years I worked at the computer center as a programming consultant. This meant that students, grad students and faculty would bring in their toughest problems to be solved during my office hours. Being able to jump in and figure out the causes and solutions to dozens of coding issues every day in Fortran, LISP, Forth, COBOL, SNOBOL, Basic, JCL, and other popular programming languages of the day was exhilarating. Later, when working at the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics, I wrote code to control the facility interlocks, build a microcode assembler, and had the opportunity to publish papers in peer-reviewed academic journals. I think I learned as much about how to solve problems in a crisis mode and how to explain advanced technology to people during these part-time and summer jobs as I did with my formal education.
