In response to new requirements of the Washington DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education that Teachers and Expanded Home Caregivers who work in center-based and home-based child development facilities must earn an Associate degree in Early Childhood Education by December 2023, I developed the SMART Start Bridge Program. The SMART Start Bridge Program is a community-based pre-college support and preparation resource. The program prepared students to pass the ACCUPLACER (college placement test) and enter the university as full fledged freshmen who aren’t in need of remedial courses. Students improved basic writing skills, computer capability, online learning strengths, and test taking skills. Collaborated with the DC Early Learning Collaborative to identify directors of both center-based and home-based child development facilities. Served on the Infant/Toddler A.A. Advisory Group in collaboration with the UDC Community College Education Program specifically advocating for early educational needs in Wards 7 and 8. Coordinated with UDC Community College Assessment Director to begin administering the ACCUPLACER entrance examination. Worked together with the National Black Child Development Institute to prepare early childhood educators, including T.E.A.C.H. - DC scholarship applicants and participants for college enrollment and successful completion of associate and bachelor degree programs. Fostered a partnership with New Futures to provide financial support to young adults seeking access to a post-secondary education. Served as the Site Coordinator/College Advisor for the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s DC College Application and Exploration Month Steering Committee. Focused on FAFSA completion and participation in the college application process. Provided targeted outreach and identified students in need of assistance while providing accessible student-level FAFSA and DC TAG OneApp. Show less
