After my previous role was disestablished I took a position as Account Underwriter - now Business Development Manager - with Vero's City Office to take the chance to gain some experience working within the broker market. I've developed into the role and the environment of the broker driven office - State's commercial call centre was largely paperless so some adjustment was required when I first started in the role. With assistance from my Sales Manager I worked on my approach to the role and my organisational skills and I'm now comfortable in the role and the broker market and performing well managing my portfolio. Working in this role has allowed me to continue in a relationship management role, which is something I thrive on, as well as refining my organisational skills and giving occasional presentations and coordinating product workshops for brokers. In my time with Vero I’ve managed two key brokerages which were originally going backwards and turned them around to growth – the more successful of the two grew by 85% in a three year period, while still maintaining a profitable base of business – this came specifically from developing a strong relationship with this West Auckland team. This role was put in place during the restructure which took place after IAG New Zealand purchased NZI with view to reviewing the agency books and, if the decision was made to retain them, to design and implement a distribution channel to take the business forward. The bulk of these agents were selling fire and general insurance as an addition to a principal business. Creating the Agent Business Centre – My initial task in this role was to review the agency book, worth approximately $30m, determine if agencies were cost effective then design and implement a smoother model for servicing them. I built a central team to manage the day-to-day needs of our agents remotely and build relationships with them over the phone. This was completed on time and within budget and the branch was opened approximately 9 months after I was appointed. Strategic Management – From this point on my role changed to one managing the strategic direction of the branch, ongoing budgeting, accounting for branch performance and development of key performance indicators for the team each financial year. I also coordinated communications with our agencies, managed product launches and working with our learning and development team to create agent focussed versions of our training resources. There was also a focus on working smarter rather than harder which was key in my work to develop the branch. Relationship Management – While building and developing relationships with our agents was largely managed remotely by the team and myself, I would also regularly visit key agencies throughout the country. My role was to keep in contact with our agencies, address any issues they were experiencing and work with the team to resolve those or where that wasn’t possible, hear our agents’ concerns and work to get them across the line where business restrictions meant no change was possible. My earlier roles within State were call centre based sales positions, in both personal and commercial lines. Show less
