I was appointed with the particular brief of ensuring Voice’s survival in the face of lost contracts, increased competition and shrinking income:- Amalgamated Voice into the Coram Group of charities, with Voice remaining a separate charity and company, retaining our brand, values and strategy, and reducing operating costs by more than £160,000. - Addressed the root causes of three years’ operating deficit; adopted a new approach to business development, innovation and fundraising, delivering almost £1m in new funding in the first year of operation.- Clarified Voice’s vision and values, focussing our strategic priorities, and introducing a people-centred approach to management in which staff are empowered to make decisions and work towards agreed objectives.

I was given the brief of adapting this global initiative to be relevant and attractive to the NHS in the UK; gaining support from the wide variety of NGOs and professional bodies with an interest in the area; promoting the initiative to Government, the NHS and health professionals while achieving full cost recovery. I built the programme from scratch to employing 20 staff with a £1 million turnover, built a nationally respected team delivering high quality audit, accreditation and training services, built powerful collaborative relationships with the UK’s four Departments of Health, NHS Trusts and NGOs, developed an evidence base for the uniquely strong, practical and measurable impact of the programme, successfully promoting it for endorsement by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and inclusion in the national infant feeding strategies for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Major contribution to an 18% increase in UK breastfeeding initiation, against a backdrop of no significant movement in the rate for two decades and no increase elsewhere in Europe.
