I’m an author, educator and journalist. I work full-time as senior lecturer in literature and journalism at Anglo-American University in Prague, Czech Republic; I also teach sometimes at the University of Vienna’s Comparative Literature Institute. Previously I taught at New York University, Utah State University, and Portland State University in the United States. I have twice been a senior Fulbright Scholar (Malta 1993, Slovakia 2011). My novel "The Talking Statues" was published last year by danzig&unfried. It's set in Rome, a city I know and love. My forthcoming book of reportage about central and eastern Europe, "Millennial Mitteleuropa", will be published also by danzig&unfried later in 2022. Some of my reporting on the Ukraine war's regional repercussions appearing here and elsewhere online will be in that book, in expanded form. My 2012 Rome travel book, "American Romanista," is available on Amazon Kindle. I also contribute to The Slovak Spectator, English-language edition of Slovakia's largest daily, Sme. Back in the late 1990s, I founded the regional magazine Edging West. I served as contributing editor for World Press Review magazine from 1980-2000, writing its “Europe Report” column throughout the 1990s. I’ve written on press issues, European culture and politics, and the American West for print and online media including National Geographic Traveler, Travel & Leisure, Far Eastern Economic Review, The Oregonian, and Philadelphia magazine. My scholarly articles have appeared in American and British Studies Annual, Studies in Foreign Language Education, Ethnologia Slovaca et Slavica, The Journal of American Folklore, and Marvels & Tales. I live eight months yearly in Prague, Czech Republic and four months in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. I share my life with my wife of nearly 30 years, Kimberley Miske Giarelli, a Portland Public Schools special education teacher, and our two dogs, Travis and Winston. Show less
