During this summer I have been working with Dr Steve Cook and Dr Peter Johnson in developing the alpha version of the LAMBDA feedback tool for maths teaching across imperial college. The tool has the goals of making maths teaching more interactive and more helpful to students with automated question feedback for students, data analytics and algorithmic question generation for educators as examples of features. My role was to provide student feedback in how these features were deployed where I worked with other students to help direct development of the tool and also to convert the previously static 'Maths for Life Scientists' course into a dynamic, rich introduction to mathematics for biological scientists. I gained experience in software development and web design, particularily in LaTeX

• I undertook my first research experience this summer in Dr Tanai Cardona’s Lab at imperial college which studies the evolution of photosynthesis. During the UROP I was given two projects:• Investigating the Diversity of Eukaryotic D1 proteins (Supervised by Dr Tanai Cardona)o D1 is the protein responsible for the water oxidation activity of photosystem II and the reason photosynthesis produces oxygeno There exists substantial diversity in the D1 protein within cyanobacteria which can enable novel photochemistry such as Chlorophyll Synthase Activity (Trinugroho et al 2020)o Although the Diversity of D1 in cyanobacteria is well documented less is known about the eukaryotic variants of D1 and possibly unique photochemistryo I designed and implemented a pipeline to automatically retrieve eukaryotic D1 sequences, filter out a paralogue protein D2 using my own algorithm, produce a list of highly divergent eukaryotic D1 variants to be studied further & produce a phylogeny of Eukaryotic D1 proteins highlighting plastid evolution events.• Computational Methods in Directed Evolution (Supervised by Dr Tom Kim)o My second project was to investigate and characterize the SCHEMA-RASPP Algorithm (Smith et al 2014) and its utility for Photosystem IIo There is considerable interest in leveraging protein engineering methods to improve photosynthesis. Directed Evolution represents a powerful approach to rapidly evolve enzymes for a given purposeo During the project I designed several experiments where I would generate different libraries for evolving different traits in D1 such as optimized water oxidation activity or novel photochemistry etc. I additionally surveyed other computational tools for directed evolution that could be of use to the Cardona Lab in evolving PSII

Tutored GCSE Maths• As a student aspiring to be an academic I think its important to practice and develop skills in teaching others and building the communication skills a scientist needs.• I also felt a responsibility to use my privilege as a student in higher education to give disadvantaged students the guidance and support they may not have access to. I was a data analyst for an independent academic project with my friends from secondary school. • The project involves a simulation of two teams competing against each other with one winner. The teams are defined in terms of parameters which influence their competitiveness; the simulation is partly deterministic and partly random. Our goal was to predict the probability of a team winning given a set of parameters. We tried multiple models and iterations of those models to fit our data and eventually tried a theoretical approach which was able to predict the winner to a high degree of certainty. We then statistically validated this final approach.• Skills and experience gained:o The nuances of simulating physical situations in pygameo How to design an experiment for a system I was completely unfamiliar witho How to organise, analyse and visualise a large dataset containing over 50 000 measurementso I have delved further into several statistical techniques I was taught in university and learnt about new methods including Monte Carlo simulationso I have learnt about Markov chains and the approaches to such a problem

Gatsby Plant Science Summer School Student
-
Jun 2020 - Jul 2020
A summer school run by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation with the aims to increase engagement with plant science at an undergraduate level. This year several talks were given about crop management, climate change and the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to studying plant science. These talks were followed by tutorials after which we got to ask the lecturers our own questions. The summer school has offered me a lot of guidance and encouragement to pursue a career in research. It was a great experience.
