I am in the research group 'Climate and Food Security' and teaching and research are my key tasks. Currently, I am participating in 4 EU projects on hydroponic production of microgreens in GOHYDRO project (https://gohydro.org/), biowaste valorization as mushroom substrate in MUSHNOMICS project (https://www.mushnomics.org/), plant-based food (FOODSHIFT) and vertical farming (SMARTFOOD). My past projects are on agroforestry (SustainFARM), soil, water and nutrient use (WATERFARMING), soil functions (LANDMARK) and intercropping (DIVERSIFY) and soil carbon dynamics (SMARTSOIL). I am co-ordinating a researcher exhange program on cotton breeding (CottonBREED) with University in India. I was the Co-ordinator of WaterFAMING project (2017-2020) titled 'Improvement of water and nutrient retention and use efficiency in arable farming systems from field to catchment scale in Europe and North Africa. I was also the Co-ordinator of SustainFARM (2016-2019), funded by The Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change and the project title is 'Innovative and sustainable intensification of integrated food and non-food systems to develop climate-resilient agro-ecosystems in Europe and beyond. DIVERSify is H2020 project (2017-2021) and the objective is to produce tools to support the adoption of productive and resilient agricultural systems based on plant species diversity and develop synergistic plant teams for yield stability and climate-smart sustainable practice LANDMARK (2015-2019) is H2020 project and the objective is to quantify the current and potential supply of soil functions in EU based on soil properties, land use and soil management practices. My role is to work on decision support tool (Soil Navigator) for use by farmers, agricultural advisory services and policy makers. Currently, I work with valuation of marketed and non-marketed ecosystem goods and services in diverse natural and agro-ecosystems. Using robust field methods, I make dedicated soil process measurements (nutrient cycling, food web links, trophic interactions) terresterial gas flux measurements (CO2, NOX, SOX), carbon sequestration, soil macro-microfauna determination, terresterial structural and functional biodiversity, elemental stoichiometry in terresterial and atmospheric components and their monetary valuation, emergy analysis at the levels of production system, regional and at national level and comparisons with other production systems Show less

I am working on identifying quantitative trait Loci (QTLS) responsible for blast disease resistance in rice. The idea is to pyramid the genes into cultivated variety so that disease resistance can be achieved. Such strategy will not only save on precious rice grain yield but also save on chemicals required to control the disease and therefore our environment. I have been evaluating annual field crop materials like rice, maize, wheat, barley, legumes etc. from International CGIAR organizations and the local materials for their productivity in terms of economic yield. Based on the on-station performance, the varieties were then multiplied and given to farmers to assess their performance in farmer field conditions I have been evaluating annual field crop materials like rice, maize, wheat, barley, legumes etc. from International CGIAR organizations and the local materials for their productivity in terms of economic yield.
