Yoga for Seniors

Overview

Seniors age 65 and older are the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. population and – like many Americans – are increasingly drawn to yoga. This presents both a great opportunity and a serious challenge for yoga instructors, since some commonly taught postures may pose significant risks for older bodies. Yoga for Seniors is a network of yoga professionals dedicated to advancing the art and science of adapting the yoga practice to older bodies, minds, and spirits. Co-directors Kimberly Carson and Carol Krucoff are experienced yoga therapists who have spent decades teaching yoga in medical settings to older adults and people with health challenges. Their trainings, books, audios, and DVDs combines the best of current, evidence-based medicine with the ancient wisdom, experience and tradition of Yogic teachings. The Yoga for Seniors Community includes the more than 700 yoga teachers who have graduated from their professional trainings. Yoga for Seniors is grounded in the understanding that the basic tools of yoga — including relaxation, breathing and gentle postures — offer a powerful, yet low-cost and accessible means to enhance quality of life and to ease suffering caused by many ailments common to seniors including arthritis, chronic pain and heart disease.
