What’s neXT 50?!

Overview

What happens when we get older (or when we exit from a business venture) and-by choice or not, transition to a new phase of life? How do we decide on direction? How do we manage the change? Do we have the tools, knowledge, support network, ambition and desire to effect the change we want? There’s a large cohort of people, Baby Boomers who are approaching or beyond what has traditionally been regarded as “the retirement age.” The Boomers, in the way they’ve altered society through sheer numbers for the past 60 years, are going to redefine “retirement” as well in this third of their lives. Likewise, young (50+) entrepreneurs may be exiting with financial independence but are becoming restless and are looking to lead a more ‘purposeful’ life. We believe intelligently applied technology is going to play a significant role in these environments. Research shows Transitioners desire three core elements to lead an engaged & purposeful life. 1. Work for pay (perhaps fewer hours for lesser pay) 2. Giving back (volunteering in a manner that leverages their life experiences) and 3. Continuous learning (perhaps even igniting some passion they didn’t have time for), all within a community context. While the needs of Transitioners are well defined, what is not being addressed is society’s response to this challenge (and opportunity). How are businesses, volunteering organizations and institutions of learning responding to this growing asset of experienced and wise elders? How can community support people as they transition? Where will the encouragement Transitioners need come from? What’s neXT?! is a social venture (led by GEARSHIFTING INC.) that is assessing various dimensions of this opportunity – both from the Transitioner’s and the organization’s (Businesses, Not-For- Profits and Learning institutions) viewpoint. We are developing a holistic, integrated and curated digital ecosystem that will engage & empower Transitioners to lead an engaged and purposeful life.
