Overview

The University of Michigan Electric Boat (UMEB) team is an entirely student-led project team seeking to develop the next generation of engineers through leadership and sustainable technologies. Each year our team designs, builds, and races an electric-powered boat to compete and represent the University of Michigan on the national stage at the Promoting Electric Propulsion competition (PEP) hosted by the American Society of Naval Engineers. PEP is a newly established educational and competitive program seeking to foster the development of electric boats in the United States. In 2020, during our first year competing in PEP, our team placed 2nd overall. The PEP competition is held in conjunction with the bi-annual Multi-Agency Craft Conference, giving our team the opportunity to show our designs and learn from numerous industry leaders. Additionally, we have been invited by the Yacht Club de Monaco to represent the United States in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and have the chance to compete against leading global universities. While our two-year design process does not permit us to attend this summer (we will be competing at PEP 2023!), members of UMEB are working tirelessly to ensure that the University of Michigan will be known as a leader in American innovation on the international stage in the Summer of 2024.
