Overview

The Department of Communication is one of the fastest growing units serving students on campus at the University of Kentucky. Please read our latest newsletter here to learn more about departmental activities. Communication is one of four units in the College of Communication and Information, serving three major instructional roles for the University: 1) We offer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees for undergraduate Communication majors; 2) We offer a communication minor and health communication certificate; and 3) We teach most of the graduate courses leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Communication through the College Graduate Program in Communication. As you’ll see from all the information on this site, we have strong and diverse undergraduate and graduate programs. See Teaching to learn more about these programs. On the research front, we are extremely active. A recent National Communication Association survey revealed that, of programs responding to the survey, our Department is the most highly funded Communication program in the nation. New figures reveal that we have secured more than $35 million in extramural funding over the past 15 years. Almost all of this research is focused in health and risk communication and investigates ways to increase the effectiveness of media or classroom-based prevention programming. See Research. We have a variety of other activities and associations to note. We have strong undergraduate and graduate student associations. From hosting scholarly seminars and working with faculty to strengthen our programs, to planning professional development workshops and social events, these associations are extremely active and should be of interest to any motivated student.
