The Tuwapende Watoto Foundation is a children’s charity in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It offers orphaned and abandoned children a loving home and a good education to secure their future in the long term. Since 2010, the orphans have been living in the newly built orphanage, which adjoins the foundation’s own school. Since 2006, the foundation has been running a children’s home with 29 children between the ages of 3 and 24. In 2010 it opened a kindergarten and one year later a primary school. In January 2016, a care centre for small children was added. Currently, around 800 pupils attend the Tuwapende Watoto Nursery and Primary School, and for around 15% of the children, the school and transport fees as well as the costs for uniforms, meals, registration fees, etc. are covered by the foundation. In February 2016, the foundation opened a vocational school where 140 students are currently completing a two-year apprenticeship in 10 professions in the dual education system. The professions offered are tailor, baker, gardener, electrician, electronics technician, computer scientist, plumber, bicycle mechanic and hairdresser/beauty.
