From Tunghai University’s modest beginnings in 1955, the school adopted the ‘pioneering spirit’. When most Taiwanese universities’ sole emphasis was on specialization, we were the first to encourage a well-rounded general education. When the standard practice was separation between academics and life, we initiated a student work labor program to promote holistic education. 50 years later, this program has become an integral part of the Tunghai curriculum. It has been praised by people from all walks of life, and has been imitated by other universities. These examples of our pioneering spirit have made Tunghai a university unique in its goals and ideals. Tunghai has always had a deep respect for the arts and humanities. The addition of a seventh college of Fine Arts and Creative Design continues and further expands the university’s horizon. The tranquil Tunghai University campus is an ideal environment to pursue studies. You can frequently find teachers and students meeting together, or just relaxing, in many areas throughout the campus, in the acacia groves, or the campus mall, in the traditional Chinese-style buildings and the award-winning new constructions, the Sunny Meadow or the chapel. Recently, we have been working to enlarge and improve our educational facilities and our teaching body. Tunghai has consistently been among the best private universities in the country. We shall continue to innovate and make our unique contribution to higher education in Taiwan.
