Overview

The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments also known as Craighalbert Centre is a Scottish national centre which addresses the educational and therapeutic needs of children and young people affected by cerebral palsy and related conditions. In 2014, Scotland Excel ranked SCCMI the highest of all independent providers of both nursery and primary day education in Scotland for children and young people with additional support needs. In addition and also in 2014, in summarising SCCMI’s provision as “children and families benefited from excellent care and support provided by caring dedicated staff and management team”, the Care Inspectorate assessed SCCMI’s staffing quality as excellent, describing the staffing complement as being professional, trained and motivated, and also described SCCMI’s services as excellent, stating that the management and staff should continue to develop this excellent practice. The children/young people who engage with SCCMI’s programmes have an age range of birth to 19 years. Such children/young people may be affected by severe and complex limitations and difficulties including eg: physical and physiological manifestations related to movement and balance; cognitive and learning difficulties related to comprehension, writing, reading; visual disorders; communication difficulties related to both hearing and speech; and difficulties in expressing emotions, feelings and interests. SCCMI provides integrated education, therapy and support to children and families affected by such conditions through provision of day school nursery, pre-school and primary school education and other programmes which enable children from all parts of Scotland with an age range of birth to 18 years of age to access a range of flexible services.
