Overview

The Georgetown University Astronomical Society was founded in 1972 by a group of students dedicated to continuing astronomy and preserving the observatory on campus. The club retains full responsibility for the maintenance and use of the first floor and dome of the building. GUAS dedicated itself to the pursuit of amateur astronomy and strives to carry on Father Heyden's legacy in education and service to the student body and the public. The club organizes events targeted toward the student body, as well as larger special events for a more general audience. Last year, the club hosted a s’mores night, travelled to an astronomy lecture in the city, and organized a conversation with a Georgetown alum working in astronomy, a solar observation brunch, and a year-end barbeque. This year, we hope to host more speakers and attend the American Astronomical Society conference to present on the story of the observatory and Father Heyden.
