Overview

Competition policy is a critical component of any overall economic policy framework of every country. Competition Policy is intended to promote efficiency and to maximize consumer as well as social welfare. To strengthen the forces of competition in the market, both competition law and competition policy are required. It promotes creation of a business environment with efficient resource allocation and wherein abuse of market power is eliminated. With the liberalization policy of 1991 the concept of ensuring healthy competition has become all the more important. The Parliament has towards this end brought the Competition Act, 2002. Mindful of this robust development, the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi, has recognized the necessity of a Centre for Competition Law and Policy to support the initiatives for ensuring competition in the market as well as for the regulation of distortion of competition in the market by way of research, surveys and propagating knowledge among different stakeholders. The primary vision of the Centre is to encourage study and research in competition law and policy. It is going to focus on disseminating ideas and promoting research through a large network of competition professionals such as regulators, academicians, practitioners, industry experts and students. It also aims at capacity building initiatives in competition law discipline providing a platform for research, training and consultation in the domain of competition law and policy providing a forum that brings together economists, academicians practitioners and regulators providing a platform for students to interact with experts in the field of competition law and to grab the opportunities in this developing field of law.
