Overview

H O W W E W O R K We work using a combination of models and drawings – made both by hand and digitally. They function to elicit discussion and as tools for design development as much as for presentation and documentation. We also work with a lot of discussion and conversation, and quite a bit of reflection. One of the advantages of this is the inadvertent but crucial insights we gain. We work around a large central table with images and samples and are as happy to develop designs using art, music, food or the natural environment as central points of departure and development, as we are using images derived from the more traditional sources of architecture and interiors. We put a lot of effort into relationships with consultants and builders. We are not interested in a process that is adversarial or antagonistic and we believe that it’s possible to achieve both a better outcome and process this way. We love it when our clients have skills of their own that they want to incorporate into their building. We think that having a modest budget or a small project does not preclude exploring bigger ideas. Our approach is often to attempt the most with the least. Generally we prefer texture, patina and aged to new and shiny, but we’re also happy to sit the two together! We don’t believe that interior design is separate from the overall architectural design of our buildings. They develop in concert, and in collaboration with our clients. The inside and the outside are not separable, they may be of differing character (like a pomegranate) but they are part of a whole. We’re not especially influenced by what’s in fashion. This is part of our sustainable approach to design. It’s not disposable. As is our general (although not exclusive) preference for materials that are self finished and age gracefully. We usually look at ‘what’s the least we can do to make this happen?’, and we like to make our spaces work hard, they often have much more than a single
