Overview

We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers passionate to develop and work on innovative ideas and computer models that facilitate the understanding of how biological organisms and environmental systems work. We are always open to expanding our knowledge, research interests and collaboration networks. Our Research includes: • Optimization of cellular metabolism Cellular metabolism is one of the most measured phenomena and can be modelled by many formalisms, approaches and their combinations. We use just some of them – metabolic engineering; kinetic, stoichiometric and logical modelling, AI, Biotechnology. • Sustainability of Environmental Systems We study various environmental and sustainability challenges. Our research is science and praxis-oriented, as we work together with other research institutions and industry. Our goal is to broaden our expertise and work with state-of-the-art challenges on these topics – modelling of sustainable transitions, greenhouse gas emissions & system’s decarbonization, waste valorisation & circular economy, integrated assessment and management of systems, environmental and industrial biotechnology. • Systems medicine Systems medicine is a very complicated and rewarding research area, where signalling, transport and metabolism modelling skills can be applied such as physiologically based pharmacokinetics, kinetic modelling, stoichiometric modelling. • Software development Many of our group members have had engineering, information technology and software development related education. Crossing those skills with increasing competence in biological topics led to the development of software products that can be used by other researchers as well. Computational Systems Biology Group is a part of the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, University of Latvia.
