Overview

Southern Adirondack Independent Living (SAIL) is a local non-profit agency located in Queensbury, New York. We are a part of a national network of centers for independent living (ILC). In our everyday work, SAIL promotes the independence, equality, and dignity of people with disabilities in all aspects of personal and community life. For people with disabilities and their families, Independent Living means knowing what services and supports are available; having the ability to choose the services that are right for each person, family, and lifestyle; and taking responsibility for personal choices and actions. As an independent living center we are cross-disability, non-residential, provide core services towards independence, and are consumer-controlled. Cross-disability means we serve people with different types of disabilities. We provide the core services of an ILC information and referral, peer services, independent living skills, advocacy for individuals and in the community, and help with life transitions. Our Services include: - advocacy: a listening ear and an experienced helper - independent living skills training: making skills needed for an independent life more accessible - Architectural Barrier Consultation (ABC): plans on making places accessible - NHTD (Nursing Home Transition and Diversion) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Medicaid Waivers: plans to help people stay home from nursing homes - CACT: Center for Accessible Computer Technology- free accessible computer classes - TRAID: Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities- free loans of assistive technology and durable medical equipment
