Overview

SolarFertigation (SF) is an intelligent fertigation system composed of software to support the farmer’s decisions and hardware capable of translating information into actions (fertilization and irrigation). The developed solution is energy self-sufficient, thanks to the integration of a stand-alone photovoltaic system. The system collects environmental data from the field, integrates them with weather forecasts, and refines the correct fertigation solution for the type of selected crop looking at the specific growth phase. Subsequent data analysis supports the optimization of water resources and the potential increased productivity of agricultural fields. SolarFertigation deals with the problems related to food safety and the correct use of natural resources. The relentless growth of the human population over time is driving an unprecedented rise in food demand, thus demanding efficiency improvements of the farming processes. In addition, an increase in food safety is pushing for the development of traceability of products, managing every single stage of the production process. To counteract these issues, SF targets four of the sustainable objectives of the 2030 Agenda: 7 "clean and sustainable energy", 12 "responsible consumption and production", 13 "climate act" and 15 "promoting life on earth". With SF traceability methods it's possible to observe data and crops in the field, encourage more responsible consumption, optimize resources, and enhance food safety.
