Overview

Seramic is a UAE based company born out of the unique and innovative environment of Masdar Institute/Khalifa University. It was established in the Masdar City Free Zone in October 2018. Seramic Materials is its subsidiary located in the new Masdar Tech Park and supported by The Catalyst, a Masdar-BP initiative. Seramic has developed a unique circular-economy solution to recycle solid industrial waste into sustainable value-added products, in the technical ceramic and construction markets. Replacing a raw material by a waste locally produced presents several advantages. 1. First, the waste is significantly less expensive than the conventional raw material, which leads to a cheaper final product in the range of 10 to 50% cost reduction depending on the application. 2. Second, by avoiding the extraction of natural resources and its transport, a significant amount of carbon emissions are saved leading to a sustainable product. It represents at least 30% reduction in CO2 compared to a conventional ceramic. 3. Third, the energy necessary to fire an industrial waste-based ceramic can be significantly reduced compared to a conventional ceramic product which minimizes again the product carbon footprint. It can represent around 20% reduction in energy consumption. 4. Finally, the waste is diverted which reduces the quantity of material sent to landfills. Seramic’s concept represents about 2 Million dollars invested in R&D over more than 10 years, 27 scientific publications, and 6 patents. The proof of concept has been validated by Seramic Materials using different waste mixtures and developing different methods and products. To transfer the technology to the market, a showcase laboratory has been built at the Masdar Tech Park. It is the first laboratory in the GCC dedicated to the transformation of solid industrial waste into value-added products. It will help to develop a near zero-waste approach in the industrial sector.
