Pragmatic is a seed-stage investment firm. By 2021 investment metrics, it makes 'pre-seed' investments in early stage companies that have a clearly identified problem in Pragmatic's investment focus area with a clearly defined and viable solution and/or a working prototype or solution. We consider ourselves 'smart money' in the healthcare IT space, which means we will not only be your first investor (in many cases), but also active advisors, advocates and connectors for future capital raises. We believe that best solutions not only stand the test of scrutiny, but the test of time. Thus, we invest in companies that provide solutions that not only address a problem today, but one that will still be relevant ten years from now. This requires an understanding of the problem, but beyond that, of the macro-environment around it, which includes legislative and regulatory changes, technology evolution, evolving business models, competitive forces and consumer/patient behavior. Our thesis is that some of the most important, impactful and rewarding investment opportunities exist in the payer (health plan) and the healthcare data ecosystem (how data flows between healthcare stakeholders). We have a clear idea of where the white space is (what problems need solving). And we have a framework to evaluate startups against our thesis and the macro environment. Where we invest is based on clearly identified needs. How we do it is based on research and data. In other words, our approach is very PRAGMATIC.
